I recently read Cédrec Gras’ excellent account of his autumnal travels in the Russian Far East, entitled L'hiver aux trousses (Essais - Documents) (French Edition). In his book, he quotes part of Anna Akhmatova’s poem “Three Autumns.†Which reminded me, that ‘lo these many years later, even after her work was prominently featured in the “New York Review of Books†in the early ‘70’s, I had never read any of her work. And she is the preeminent Russian poet. I’ve also been nagged by a line from the movie Doctor Zhivago about how the Russians love their poets. I wonder if that is still true, in an age, as the quip has it, that more people write poetry than read it. At any rate, once I made the decision to overcome yet another lacuna, this selection of her poems was on my Kindle a couple minutes later.Anna Akhmatova lived from 1889 to 1966. Akhmatova is a pseudonym; A comment from Joseph Brodsky is provided at the beginning of this work, in which he notes that “the five open a’s (of her name) “…was her first successful line; memorable in its acoustic inevitability…this tells you a lot about the intuition and quality of the ear of this seventeen-year-old girl…†Her life spanned a tumultuous period of Russian history, including the First World War, the Revolution, the Civil War, the Stalinist terror, and the Second World War. Her first husband was executed by the Soviet secret police, and her common law husband, as well as her son spent many years in prison in the Gulag. If her poetry comes across as a bit morose, there is good reason.This selection of her work is produced in bi-lingual format, Russian – English. The translator is Andrey Kneller. Unlike some other reviewers, since I do not speak Russian, I cannot comment on the quality or accuracy of his translation. There are 41 relatively short poems, followed by her magnum opus, “Requiem.†The forty-one poems are arranged in chronological order; usually where they were written is also included. The first poem was written in Kiev, in 1909, when Akhmatova was twenty years old: “I turned and smiled at my destiny, That brought me only misery…Shall I endure without conceding, And curse you for not being there?... You’re far away. You’ll never see me, Imprisoned in my awful snare.†Hum. Certainly gloomy enough, before the tumultuous and bloody Russian history caught up with her. The last of the 41 poems, written in 1959, was a very short observation: “Pray before sleep, That you don’t wake up famous.â€The forty-one poems, even those written during the period of the World Wars, are devoid of external references, so the reader would never know there was a war occurring. Not so with “Requiemâ€, which is a searing account of life under the Stalinist terror, in the late ‘30’s. Consider: “Beneath the tires of black marias, And the weight of blood-splattered boots.†While waiting in line, outside a prison, to see her son, another woman asks her if she can depict this scene, and she answers in the affirmative: “Where the grief-stricken shadow is looking for me, But here, where I stood for three hundred hours, Where the strong iron bars obstructed the towers, For even in death I’m afraid to forget…â€For this collection, overall, 4-stars, and now I will go on to something a bit more cheerful.
I was introduced to Anna Akhmatova's poetry in snippets deep in the bowels of the Internet years ago. When I finally searched out proper translations a couple years ago, I was lucky to find Mr. kneller's work on Amazon. I've now read all of his translations for Anna Akhmatova's poetry and must say that they've been a source of joy and beauty in even the darkest times. So thank you, Andrey for the labor of love and beauty you have brought to my life.
Read in 2016I saw a biography of Anna Akhmatova at the library a few years ago. If it isn't lost, this book of her poems has inspired me to want to read it.These poems cause me to think of snow, sleet, and diamonds falling softly from the sky. I envision Russia eighty to seventy years ago. I also see love tormented or lost, pain, longing, melancholy, cold and immaculate rooms with polished antiques, rivers flowing through Russian cities, those who loved Christ standing before His crucifixion, and the loneliness and silent terror of the victims of the Stalinist years. As I got deeper into this volume I liked it more and more. Very quiet, tragic, and lovely poetry.This book contains both poems in the original Russian (which I can't read) and the English translation which to me is very lush and beautiful.
Andrey Kneller, the translator of this collection first came to my attention through his work translating Marina Tsvetaeva My Poems: Selected Poetry Of Marina Tsvetaeva (English and Russian Edition) which I thought was excellent. This, therefore led me to his translations of Akhmatova, of whom I am a tremendous admirer and fan. As anticipated Kneller's translations are outstanding. Naturally some latitude is given the translator (particularly with poetry) - one of the reasons why I purchased this collection (and the Tsvetaeva as well) is because they are dual language, an added bonus. Even expecting (and forgiving) the editorial decisons made, Kneller has truly created masterpieces of his own from Akhmatova's work. For example, "In the evening":With sadness words cannot describe,OUt in the garden, music played.The frozen oysters on the plateSmelled pungently of sea and brine.He gently touched my evening dressAnd said, "I am a loyal friend!"And yet, the contact of his handFelt nothing like a true caress.Thus one might pet a cat, a bird,Or watch a slender circus rider ...Beneath his golden lashes, hidingAmusement, happiness and mirth.And as the smoke diffuses idly,The doleful fiddles sing above it:"O, thank the Heavens - finallyFirst time alone with your beloved."The original Russian doesn't quite fit, but the sense of space, time and duplicity are brilliantly captured by Kneller. I reluctantly rate it five stars, however, for the selection. Akhmatova'w work spans nearly 5 decades, from the early 20th century through the Khrushchev era. The 40 poems presented here are heavily skewed towards Akhmatova's early work, with literally only a handful from 1940 onward. For me, her work during (and after) the war was her most interesting and powerful as she wrote of the Terror, the Seige of Leningrad, and her time in Central Asia. In the end, I had to give it a fifth star for the brilliance of the translation, and the fact the book is dual - language, something I always appreciate when reading poetry (even if it isn't in a language I can understand.)For those unfamilar with this beautiful poet, this is a solid place to start. (Although I would also recommend Poems of Akhmatova: Izbrannye Stikhi).
